If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, I completely understand why it can feel a little intimidating.
You might be wondering, “Are they just going to crack my back?” “Do I need X-rays?” “What if something more serious is going on?” “Am I going to be told I need 50 visits before anyone explains anything?”
These are fair questions. And honestly, they are questions more offices should answer clearly.
At Lakeshore Integrated Health / Lakeshore Chiropractic in Sarasota, FL, your first chiropractic visit is not about rushing you onto a table and hoping for the best. It is about figuring out what is actually going on with your body, what is causing your pain or movement problem, and what type of care plan makes the most sense for you.
Because the truth is, your first visit should not feel like a sales pitch.
It should feel like someone is finally paying attention.
Your First Chiropractic Visit Starts With a Real Conversation
Before we talk about X-rays, adjustments, spinal decompression, corrective exercises, or any of the advanced therapies we offer, we start with your story.
That matters more than people realize.
When did the pain start? Was there an injury? Is it getting worse? Does it travel down your arm or leg? Is there numbness, tingling, weakness, headaches, stiffness, poor balance, or trouble sleeping? Have you had this problem before? Have you already tried chiropractic care, physical therapy, injections, medication, massage, or surgery?
These details help us understand whether we are dealing with a simple joint restriction, a disc issue, nerve irritation, muscle weakness, posture problem, pelvic instability, or a combination of several things.
This is also where we listen for red flags. Not every patient should be adjusted right away. Not every patient should be treated the same way. And not every problem belongs in a chiropractic office first.
That is why a good first chiropractic visit should include more than, “Where does it hurt? Okay, lie face down.”
That is not enough.
Why We Take X-Rays When Clinically Necessary
One of the big things patients ask is, “Do I need X-rays at my first chiropractic visit?”
The answer is: sometimes.
At Lakeshore Integrated Health / Lakeshore Chiropractic, we take X-rays when they are clinically necessary. We do not take them just to scare you. We do not take them just to create a dramatic report. We take them when we need more information to understand your spine, your structure, your posture, your alignment, your degeneration, or whether there are findings that may change how we treat you.
X-rays can help us evaluate things like spinal alignment, posture changes, arthritis, disc spacing, old injuries, abnormal curves, instability patterns, and other structural issues. They can also help us make safer decisions about chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, and other therapies.
But let me be clear: X-rays do not tell the whole story.
They are one piece of the puzzle.
A patient can have ugly X-rays and feel pretty good. Another patient can have X-rays that do not look too dramatic but still have severe pain because of a disc, nerve, soft tissue, or muscle control issue. That is why imaging has to be combined with a good exam and a real understanding of the person in front of us.
When We Refer Out for MRI
Sometimes X-rays are not enough.
If your symptoms suggest a possible herniated disc, bulging disc, nerve compression, spinal stenosis, severe sciatica, progressive weakness, or another issue that needs deeper imaging, we may refer out for an MRI.
An MRI gives us a better look at the soft tissues, including discs, nerves, ligaments, and other structures that X-rays cannot fully show. This can be especially important for patients with symptoms like pain traveling down the leg, numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain that has not responded to other care.
And here is something important: when you get an MRI, we do not just ignore the report and hope someone else explains it to you.
We professionally read and review MRI findings with our patients so they understand what is happening. We look at the images, the report, and how those findings match your symptoms and exam. Because an MRI finding only matters if it makes sense with the person standing in front of us.
This is where a lot of patients finally feel relief. Not because the MRI magically fixes anything, but because they finally understand what is going on.
And once you understand the problem, the plan becomes a lot clearer.
The Chiropractic Exam: More Than Just “Does This Hurt?”
Your first chiropractic exam should be careful and specific. At Lakeshore Integrated Health / Lakeshore Chiropractic, we do not want to guess. We want to test.
That means your first visit may include orthopedic testing, neurological screening, range of motion testing, muscle testing, posture evaluation, movement assessment, and a hands-on spinal exam. The goal is to figure out what is moving well, what is not moving well, what is weak, what is guarded, and what may be driving the symptoms.
Muscle testing is especially important because pain is not always just about pain. Sometimes the bigger issue is that certain muscles are not doing their job. If your core, glutes, hips, pelvic stabilizers, or spinal support muscles are weak or poorly coordinated, your spine may be taking more stress than it should.
Posture evaluation matters too, but not in the cheesy “your posture is bad, so your life is doomed” kind of way. We look at posture because it gives clues about how your body is loading itself every day. Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, pelvic tilt, uneven hips, guarded movement, and poor spinal control can all help explain why certain areas keep flaring up.
The exam helps us answer the real question:
Is this a joint problem, disc problem, nerve problem, muscle problem, posture problem, stability problem, or a combination?
Because most real patients are not textbook cases.
Most people are a messy mix of several things.
Will I Get Adjusted on My First Visit?
Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no.
And that is the honest answer.
If your exam and imaging suggest that chiropractic care is appropriate, we may start with an adjustment on your first visit. But if we need X-rays first, if your symptoms suggest something more serious, or if we believe another therapy would be safer or more effective to start, we may not adjust right away.
That is not us delaying care.
That is us being responsible.
The goal is not to “crack something” just because you walked into a chiropractic office. The goal is to choose the right first step.
For some patients, that might be a chiropractic adjustment. For others, it might be non-surgical spinal decompression, soft tissue therapy, shockwave, gentle mobility work, corrective exercises, Emsella for pelvic floor support, or another therapy that better fits the problem.
A good chiropractic visit should not be about forcing every patient into the same box.
It should be about matching the treatment to the actual problem.
We Get Started With the Right Therapies
One thing that makes our office different is that we are not limited to just one tool.
At Lakeshore Integrated Health / Lakeshore Chiropractic in Sarasota, we use chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression, IST/mechanical traction tables, corrective exercises, soft tissue therapies, shockwave/Cellutone, Emsculpt Neo, Emsella, EXOMIND, and other advanced therapies depending on what the patient actually needs.
That does not mean every patient needs every therapy.
It means we have options.
And options matter because low back pain, neck pain, herniated discs, sciatica, posture problems, weakness, pelvic instability, chronic tension, and mobility issues do not all respond to the exact same thing.
For example, someone with a simple joint restriction may respond really well to chiropractic adjustments. Someone with a disc problem may need non-surgical spinal decompression. Someone with weak spinal support may need corrective exercises and eventually Emsculpt Neo for deeper core strengthening. Someone with pelvic floor weakness or instability may benefit from Emsella as part of a broader core-to-floor plan.
This is why I always say chiropractic care alone is sometimes not enough.
That is not an insult to chiropractic.
That is just real life.
If the body needs more support, then the plan should offer more support.
We Do Not Just Hand You Exercises and Wish You Luck
This is a big one.
A lot of people have been told, “Here are some exercises. Good luck.”
Then they go home, try them twice, wonder if they are doing them right, get frustrated, stop doing them, and feel like they failed.
But sometimes the patient did not fail.
Sometimes the plan failed them.
At Lakeshore Integrated Health / Lakeshore Chiropractic, there are situations where we bring patients into the gym and work with them one-on-one. We want to make sure they understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how to do it safely.
Because corrective exercises are not just random homework.
They are part of the treatment plan.
If your back pain is related to poor core control, weak glutes, poor hip mechanics, pelvic instability, or bad movement habits, then exercise is not optional. It is part of rebuilding the support system around your spine.
But you should not have to guess your way through it.
We are not a coach standing far away with a whistle saying, “Good luck out there.”
We are a partner in the process.
We want to help you understand your body, build confidence, and know what to do when you are not in the office.
Your First Visit Should Give You Clarity
One of the biggest goals of your first chiropractic visit is clarity.
You should leave with a better understanding of what is going on, what we found, what we are concerned about, what your options are, and what the next step looks like.
That does not always mean we have every single answer on day one. Sometimes we need X-rays. Sometimes we need an MRI. Sometimes we need to see how your body responds to the first few visits. Sometimes we need to rule things out before we can confidently move forward.
But you should never feel like you are being pushed into care without understanding why.
A first chiropractic visit should answer questions like:
- What might be causing my pain?
- Do I need X-rays or an MRI?
- Is chiropractic care appropriate for me?
- Do I need spinal decompression?
- Are my muscles weak or not firing well?
- Is posture or movement contributing to the problem?
- What should we do first?
- What does progress look like?
That is how healthcare should feel.
Clear. Direct. Honest.
What Makes Lakeshore Integrated Health Different?
We are still a chiropractic office first, but we have grown far beyond the old-school model of “adjust everyone and send them home.”
Over the years, we realized our patients needed more support. They needed more answers. They needed better tools. They needed an office that could look at pain, movement, strength, stability, posture, discs, nerves, muscles, and recovery as one connected system.
That is why our office is set up with chiropractic care, digital X-rays, MRI review, non-surgical spinal decompression, IST tables, corrective exercise support, Emsculpt Neo, Emsella, EXOMIND, and other advanced therapies.
We do not believe every patient needs the same care plan. We do not believe every problem is fixed with one adjustment. And we definitely do not believe in throwing exercises at people and hoping they figure it out alone.
If you need hands-on care, we provide it.
If you need decompression, we have it.
If you need strengthening, we help build it.
If you need imaging, we guide you through it.
If you need one-on-one support in the gym, we can do that too.
That is what I mean when I say we are a partner in the process.
Not a quick stop.
Not a cookie-cutter office.
A partner.
“Do I Need to Be in Pain to See a Chiropractor?”
No, but pain is usually what brings people in.
Many patients start chiropractic care because they have low back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, stiffness, or an injury. But once the pain improves, the conversation often changes. Then we start talking about movement, strength, posture, stability, prevention, and maintenance.
That is where quarterly maintenance can make sense for some people. Not three times a week forever. Not fear-based care. Not scare tactics.
Just reasonable check-ins to help your body stay ahead of bigger problems.
The goal is not to make people dependent on care. The goal is to help them understand their body, move better, and need us less over time.
That might be bad business advice.
But it is good healthcare.
“What If I’m Nervous About Being Adjusted?”
That is completely normal.
A lot of people are nervous before their first chiropractic adjustment. Some have seen dramatic videos online. Some had a bad experience somewhere else. Some just do not like the idea of their neck or back being moved.
That is okay.
A good chiropractor should talk you through what is happening. They should explain what they are doing and why. They should adjust the plan based on your comfort level, your exam findings, and your goals.
There are different ways to provide chiropractic care. Not every adjustment has to look or sound the same. Some patients do great with manual adjustments. Others may need gentler techniques, decompression, soft tissue work, traction, or exercise-based care first.
You are allowed to ask questions.
You are allowed to be nervous.
And you are allowed to say, “I’m not comfortable with that.”
That should be respected.
First Chiropractic Visit FAQ
How long does a first chiropractic visit take? Your first visit usually takes longer than a normal treatment visit because we need to complete a consultation, exam, possible X-rays, posture evaluation, muscle testing, and discuss your next steps. We are trying to understand the problem, not rush you in and out.
Will I need X-rays at my first chiropractic appointment? Not always. We take X-rays when they are clinically necessary and when they help us make safer, smarter decisions. If your symptoms suggest a disc, nerve, or soft tissue issue that X-rays cannot fully explain, we may refer out for MRI.
Do you review MRI results? Yes. If you already have an MRI, or if we refer you out for one, we professionally review MRI findings with you and explain how they connect to your symptoms and exam. We do not want you staring at a confusing report full of scary words with no one explaining what they actually mean.
Will I get adjusted on the first visit? Possibly. If it is appropriate and safe based on your exam and findings, we may begin chiropractic care on the first visit. If we need imaging or a different starting point, we may begin with another therapy instead.
What therapies might be included in my care plan? Depending on your condition, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression, IST/mechanical traction, corrective exercises, one-on-one gym sessions, soft tissue therapy, shockwave/Cellutone, Emsculpt Neo, Emsella, or other therapies that support your goals.
Is Lakeshore Integrated Health only a chiropractic office? We are still a chiropractic office, but we are built to do much more than traditional chiropractic alone. Our focus is spine health, movement, strength, stability, recovery, and helping patients understand what their body actually needs.
